Dicky played for Penzance and Newlyn, Richmond, Cornwall, Scorpions, Kenya and Uganda. In 1969 and 1970 during his playing days with Kampala RFC in Uganda, Richard Evans was instrumental in two of the Ugandan clubs’ victories in the Enterprise Cup. He then relocated to Kenya where he represented first Nondies then Mombasa and back to Nondies.
He subsequently won his Nondescripts honor’s cap that same year-1976. Dickie was also a rugby umpire of International repute handling the Scorpions International match against touring Blackheath in 1979. He remains an influential figure in Kenya Rugby sponsoring the Nondescripts in Nairobi, South Coast Pirates in Diani, the Safari 7s, the Kenya U20s and Kenya Simbas. In 2022 a “Dicky Evans Museum” was created in his honour by the Nondescripts RFC.
‘Impala went down 26-3 to an inspired Dickie Evans and Chris Okong’o-Okwelle’s Kampala RFC on 8 August 1970 in the Enterprise Cup final at the Kampala Sports Club in Kampala, Uganda. Dickie scored a hat-trick of tries with Okong’o-Okwelle kicking 11 points. Kampala skipper Martin Watson scored two tries. Rob Rowlands’ penalty was the only response from Impala. ‘
Although he suffered a major injury scoring a try for Nondescripts in the 1976 Enterprise Cup final he still came back and led the Nondies A side to the 1981 Eric Shirley Shield title. Dickie was born on 17/11/ 1945 in England. He arrived in Uganda in 1969 and first played for Kampala RFC in 1969.
